How To Choose Your Perfect Mattress

Did you know that we spend around one third of our lives asleep? So it’s no wonder choosing a new mattress is such a big decision! Everyone’s bedtime needs are different, and whether you’re looking for something sturdy and supportive or prefer something soft for extra comfort, mattress buying is a very personal decision.

Even a high value mattress – if it’s not the correct fit for your needs – can cause issues down the road, so it’s vital to ask yourself some questions before you make your purchase. Remember, you’ll be sleeping on this mattress for the next 10 or so years, so it pays to put in the time now to get it right – and don’t forget, we’re available in store to offer expert advice on choosing your Sleeping Giant bed and mattress if you need help finding your recommended mattress.

Dealing with pain

Think first about your current quality of sleep. Do you have back, hip or shoulder problems, or any other health issues that affect the quality of your sleep? Do you toss and turn a lot or wake up in pain? If you get up in more pain than when you went to bed, it’s definitely time to buy a new mattress!

Do keep in mind that if you’re having troubles with your back, hips, shoulders or something else, no mattress can actually fix a chronic problem. But to alleviate nightly pressure points, mattress choice really can make a difference, and picking the right one may even improve your sleep quality. Choosing the wrong one, on the other hand, can cause more pain, which is why, for healthy sleep, mattress choice is so important.

Sleep position

When choosing a mattress, consider how you like to sleep. If you lie on your stomach, you may find a firm mattress or an extra firm mattress most comfortable to keep your spine aligned. A medium mattress supports the spine, back and neck for back sleepers, while a soft comfort mattress is great for side-sleepers, as it contours the body’s curves. For lower back support, mattress firmness is also key – one study suggests medium-firm mattresses may offer more pain relief than firm mattresses (however, no one mattress style will suit everyone with lower back pain).

A memory foam mattress may also be a good option for those with nightly aches, as it moulds itself to your body, giving optimal spine alignment and support that’s catered to your body. Memory foam also evenly distributes your weight, which can help relieve those painful pressure points.

Identify what’s important

What are you currently sleeping on, how old is it, and why are you replacing it? These questions can help you understand which qualities are most important to you when making your purchase. For example, if you’ve been on the same mattress for 15 years, durability is probably a top priority! Or perhaps you forked out thousands for your last mattress in the hopes of guaranteeing quality sleep, but didn’t love it as much as you’d hoped, meaning you don’t want to spend as much this time – this indicates that value will be top of mind.

Will you be sleeping alone or sharing the bed with a partner? If you’re sleeping with someone else, do you have different needs? Features like minimal partner disturbance and roll together may be high on a couple’s list (another situation where a memory foam mattress might be a good idea) but could be of little value to someone who’s sleeping solo.
Really take the time to think about your ‘why’ when buying a new mattress to help you choose which features are important to you (and which ones to cross off the list).

Size matters

Don’t forget about size! Do you want to stick with what you have size-wise or is it time for a change? Maybe you’re planning to start a family and know that co-sleeping will be on the agenda – in this case you might want to upsize from a double mattress or queen mattress to a king mattress. (Don’t forget to measure your room – there’s no point buying a king mattress if only a queen will fit the space.)

Sleeping Giant has options for the whole family, from a single mattress for the kids (or a king single mattress for a bit of extra growing room) to the super-sized king mattress that’s perfect for a couple who like their space – or just someone who likes to spread out!

Clean thinking

Given that your mattress will last you 10 to 15 years, keeping nasties like bacteria, mould, mildew and fungi away could well be on your mind. Thanks to the UltraFresh treatment mattress manufacturers widely use on their products, these days, hygiene is easily taken care of before you even take your mattress home (every Sleeping Giant Art & Science Mattress undergoes this treatment). UltraFresh is an antimicrobial treatment that helps prevent bacteria growth, working to keep your mattress fresh, durable and free from odours.
